Anthony V. Cerchiara of Mt. Vernon passed away on Sunday August 25, 2013. The eldest of seven children, born February 16, 1922 to Rocco and Maria Cerchiara. Anthony was predeceased by his beloved wife Lillian in 2010. Loving father of Anthony V. Cerchiara, Jr.; dear brother of Vincent, Irene, Domenica and Yolanda. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. He grew up in the Wakefield section of the Bronx. Anthony attended Evander Childs High School, Hampden Sydney College of Virginia, City College and the New York Law School where he was awarded his Doctor of Law Degree, Cum Laude. Volunteering in World War II, he was a commissioned Lieutenant in the US Navy, Deck, Engineering and Boat Group Commander. He was decorated for his service in China, Philippines, Asiatic, and Pacific together with operation ribbons and stars. Ordered to Stockton California, he was part of a team of officers assigned to decommissioning war ships. He was admitted to practice in the New York State Courts and Federal District Courts and is a Certified Circuit and County Mediator of the Supreme Court of Florida. He served as an Associate City Court Judge in Mt Vernon and some of his decisions were published in the New York Reports. In the local media, he was acclaimed a low profile, competent jurist. Anthony has completed more than 50 years of service as an attorney. He is also a Past Grand Knight, District Deputy and Lecturer of Council #410. He is a Life Member of the Knights of Columbus and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Family will receive friends from 2-4 & 7-9 pm on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at the funeral home. Funeral Mass 10:00 am Saturday at Sts. Peter & Paul Church. Interment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
