Sanders, Barbara W.
Barbara (Wood) Sanders, 82, of Dobbs Ferry, NY, and North Rochester, MA, died peacefully at home after a brief illness December 4, 2012. She was the wife of the late John E. Sanders.
Barbara was the daughter of the late Roger and Gladys (Elliott) Wood and the daughter-in-law of the late Alice H. Sanders and William L. Sanders.
She graduated from Dennis-Yarmouth High School on Cape Cod, where she grew up. She was a loyal alumna of Smith College and was active in the Smith Club of Westchester County, NY, serving in many capacities on the club's board, including as president. While living in New Haven, CT, she earned a Masters degree from Southern Connecticut State University. She loved to travel with her husband of 47 years, visiting Europe, Africa and Asia. She was recently inducted as an honorary alumna at the Hackley School, in Tarrytown, NY, where she taught art for nearly 25 years, retiring as chairman of the Visual Arts Department. As a teacher, she was noted for her kindness, sense of humor, and encouragement of individual students' self expression. She was an early environmentalist and health food enthusiast. Her pastimes included horseback riding, quilting and painting.
She was the proud mother of three children: son Philip, son Thomas (Janice), daughter Stephanie Sullivan (John); doting grandmother of four: William, Katherine, Daniel and Scott; and loving caregiver of numerous family pets, including Yale mascots Handsome Dan IX and X.

). A celebration of her life will be held in New York in January.
