Gerald C. McKinstry, Sr.

Gerald C. McKinstry Sr., a longtime educator, died on Thursday at Calvary Hospital in Bronx, N.Y. He was 86. McKinstry, of Yonkers and East Hampton, N.Y., taught English for more than two decades in the South Bronx. Prior to teaching in the New York City Public Schools, he was a professor of Theology at St. John's University. A native of Harlem, McKinstry joined the Irish Christian Brothers when he was 15 and served the order for more than 20 years. He taught and coached at Blessed Sacrament High School and All Hallows High School, among other schools. McKinstry attended Rice High School, graduated from Iona College in 1953, earned a master's in Theology at St. John's University and pursued post-graduate work at New York University
. He is pre-deceased by his mother, Matilda (nee Hayes) McKinstry, sister Helen (nee DeRito) Wiggers and two siblings who died during infancy. He is survived by his wife Ann (nee Higgins) McKinstry; daughters Maureen Cheesman and Megan Ruppenstein; son Gerald C. McKinstry Jr.; son-in-laws John and Chris; and daughter-in-law Amy. He had seven grandchildren. A wake will be held on Sunday, Aug. 4 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at F. Ruggiero & Sons in Yonkers. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Paul the Apostle Church in Yonkers at 10 a.m. Monday. Internment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, N.Y. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Calvary Hospital.
