Osterman, Herbert W.

Herbert W. Osterman, of Tarrytown, died at home on May 21, 2013 at the age of 90. Mr. Osterman was born in New York City on September 25, 1922 and moved with his parents, Emanuel and Belle Osterman, to Detroit, Michigan when he was 12 years old. He graduated from the University of Michigan and began a lifelong career as an actuary for the Wyatt Company, working in the Washington DC, New York, NY and Stamford, CT offices. He was a member of the American Academy of Actuaries and obtained a law degree from George Washington University to aid in legal aspects of actuarial work. In his retirement Mr. Osterman was an avid golfer and enjoyed gardening. He approached life with an indomitable spirit, and he stayed true to himself to the very end of a long battle with Alzheimer's.

He is survived by his wife Gladys, sons David (Laura) and Jonathan, grandchildren Cybele Mayes-Osterman, Dan and Mira Osterman, brother-in-law Earl Kuhlik and nephew and niece Bruce and Amy Kuhlik. His sister Barbara Kuhlik predeceased him.

The family will hold a private memorial service. Memorial donations are requested instead of flowers to the University of Michigan.
