After 85 wonderful years, the much loved John Robert (Bob) Gilson passed away on January 5th, 2013. Bob is lovingly remembered by the passion of his life, his wife Loretta M. Gilson. Bob is also in the hearts of his five children, Patty, Bill, Bob, Anne and Lori. Bob's spirit and love of life is well represented in his thirteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Born on September 27th, 1927, Bob enlisted in the Army in 1944 and was Honorably Discharged after serving the country he loved. A graduate of Fordham University, Bob spent his professional life as a teacher, mentor and coach. He studied and taught American History with a strong belief in the principles that make our nation great. He was awarded a number of fellowships, including the John Hay Fellowship and fellowships to study at Princeton University, which allowed him to do what he liked best: to read and learn.

His passion in life was his wife of 60 years, Loretta. He was a devoted father and friend. He traveled and read extensively.

Bob will be remembered by his family and friends in a memorial service to be held at the Newman Center, 218 Pittsboro St Chapel Hill, NC on Saturday January 12th, 2013 at 2pm. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to UNC Hospice - .
