Julio Mercado Rivera of West Haverstraw passed away peacefully at home with his loving family by his side on November 4, 2012. He was 84. Julio was born February 18, 1928 in Puerto Rico to the late Juan Mercado Huertas and Luisa Rivera Buzo. He was a proud US Army veteran having served during the Korean conflict in the 65th Infantry Division. Julio received a Purple Heart and 3 Bronze Stars, as well as other decorations, during his service. He was a member of American Legion Post 46, V.F.W., and Disabled American Veterans.

Julio is survived by his wife of 54 years, Venancia (Quinones Hernandez); daughter Maria Luisa Mercado; son-in-law Ramon Pacheco; step daughters Santa Lemoine and her husband Ronald, Hilda Cruz; grandchildren Sadoc Cintron, Jr., Berenice Cintron, Ivette Cintron, Jeff Molina, Obed Molina; seven great-grandchildren; siblings Evaristo Mercado, Juan Mercado, Epifania Mercado and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters Irina Mercado, Josefa Mercado, Esther Mercado and brothers Ismael and Pedro Mercado.

Family and friends may visit Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9pm at the T.J. McGowan Sons FH HAVERSTRAW. Julio's Funeral Service will be held Wednesday November 7, 2012 at 10:00am at the funeral home. Interment will follow with full military honors in the F.W. Loescher Veterans Cemetery, New Hempstead.
