Walsh Kuehn, Mary Elizabeth
Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Walsh Kuehn, born February 14, 1918, Valentine's Day, at St. Catherine's Hospital in Brooklyn, NY, died on February 2nd in her home at the Westchester Country Club where she was a resident for over 50 years. She was the daughter of the late Florence Isabel Gillen and John Henry Walsh. Betty was a graduate of Marymount High School and Finch Junior college. She worked as a nurse's aide for the Red Cross during World War II. This was the beginning of a life time of charitable work including actively supporting Meals on Wheels, Trinity Mission, the Salvation Army, local soup kitchens and various Catholic charities. She was always generous with her time and resources. Betty was associated with the Rock Wool Insulation Company in White Plains, NY for over 40 years prior to her retirement.
Betty married Bill Kuehn in 1989. He was the love of her life, and with his humor and easy going manner, the perfect partner. Bill passed away in December of 1991. Despite the brevity of their marriage, their happiness in each other was an inspiration to those around them.
Betty was the epitome of an old fashioned lady; always courteous and polite, generous, kind and thoughtful of the needs of others. Her passions were art, music, travel and fashion. She was a seeker of beauty and found it in the most common aspects of daily life. She was a longtime member of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City Ballet, the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood.
An animal lover from a very early age, she always had a special pet, all of whom returned her love and devotion many times over. Although she never had children she was a loving and happy influence in the lives of her younger cousins and friends.
Donations in lieu of flowers may be made in Betty's honor to the ASPCA or the Children's Aid Society.
