Michaelides, Paraskevas "Perry"
Paraskevas "Perry" Michaelides, a retired family physician and longtime Middletown resident, died on Friday, January 10, 2014 surrounded by his devoted family following a long illness. He was 98.
The son of the late John and Clioniki Michaelides, he was born on April 18, 1915 on the island of Cyprus. He came to the United States at the age of 18, after his undergraduate years, he studied medicine at Louisiana State University
. Dr. Michaelides graduated in 1943 and served his residency at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, LA. In 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Army
to serve his adopted country in the Medical Corps during World War II
. In 1946, he was honorably discharged after receiving several medals including the Purple Heart
and 2 Battle Stars.
After returning home, he married Irene "Rena" Cuyulis on October 25, 1947 in New York City. He was a faithful partner and loving husband for 66 years.
He loved his profession and dedicated his life to medicine. Dr. Michaelides operated his private practice in Middletown before his retirement at the age of 86. Prior to coming to Middletown, he served as Chief of Staff of Dermatology at the Manhattan Veterans Administration Hospital. After retiring from that position, Perry worked as a consultant for several Hudson Valley and Manhattan hospitals. He enjoyed his private practice and worked as a professor of Medicine for NYU. He traveled down to NYU to teach residents up until two years prior to his retirement.
He was a very spiritual and religious man who was a longtime member of Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church in Middletown.
Perry was dearly loved and will be missed by everyone who knew him. Soft spoken, humble, gentle and sweet, everyone he met was touched by his sincerity, warmth and care. His genuine concern for others stretched all the way to his patients as well as his family and friends. In addition to his loving wife, Rena; he is survived by one son, Jan Mark of Danbury, CT and one daughter, Niki of Middletown; one brother Dimitri and one sister, Helen; and two grandsons, Christopher and Mark.
Visitation hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm on Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc., 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940. A Funeral Service will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, January 15, 2014 at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church, 2250 Goshen Turnpike, Middletown, NY 10941. Fr. Chris Talleos will officiate. Burial will follow in the Greek Section of Wallkill Cemetery, Midway Park Road, Middletown, NY.
