Nelson, Robert James, Jr. "Bob"
Robert James Nelson Jr. (Bob), a long time resident of Nyack, passed away on Monday, November 5th at Kindred Hospital in Dover, NJ. He was 87. Born on April 23, 1925 in Brooklyn, NY, He was the son of Robert James and Rachel Nelson.
Bob graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School in 1942. He served in the U.S. Armed Forces and was stationed at military bases in Oak Ridge, Tennessee and Los Alamos, New Mexico. After honorable discharge from the service, Bob attended N.Y.U and graduated in 1947 with a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He continued his studies at N.Y.U., earning a Master's Degree in Business Administration in 1954.
On November 16, 1957, Bob married his wife Jeanne Dutcher in New York and they were happily married for nearly 55 years. In 1967, Bob and his wife moved to Nyack, NY where they were extremely active in village governmental affairs. Bob was a long time member and Chair of the Village of Nyack Planning Board from 1985 - 1997, and served as Trustee of the Edward Hopper Landmark Preservation Foundation. Bob and Jeanne expanded their efforts to wider county environmental issues which resulted in their receiving the Rockland County Executive's Outstanding Environmental Volunteer Award in 2007.
Bob had an extensive career with Westinghouse, TRW, and General Electric where he worked in the International Sales Division. Following retirement, he taught business as an adjunct professor at Dominican College, Mercy College, and Long Island University.
Bob was a wonderful man who will be dearly missed by family and friends alike. Bob is survived by his son John Robert Nelson and his wife Ann Marie of Middletown, NY and their two children John Robert Jr. and Caitlyn Ashley, and many nieces and nephews, all of whom who were very important in his life.
A gathering and celebration of Bob's life will be held at Hannemann Funeral Home in Nyack on Saturday, November 17, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
