Coe, Sally Gillespie
Sally Gillespie Coe of White Plains passed away peacefully at home on Monday 6th May 2013. Sally lived in White Plains for over 50 years, having moved here in 1958 with lawyer husband Robert and two little girls, soon followed by another girl and boy, both born in White Plains Hospital All five grandchildren were also born in the new medical center, an institution subsequently very close to her heart. Her involvement with the Hospital Auxiliary dates back to the 1960's, and had the great privilege of shepherding the service into the 21st century by serving as President from 1999-2001. As her children grew up she also served as President of five PTAs including the Church Street School, Highlands Junior High and White Plains High School, as well as President of the White Plains PTA Council, while finding time to be a Troop Leader with the Girl Scouts. Over the years Sally held the title of President of both the Women's Club of White Plains, the Westchester Federation of Women's Clubs and the White Plains Beautification Foundation as well as the Hospital Auxiliary. She was an active member of the Board of Directors for both the YMCA of Central and Northern Westchester and the YWCA of White Plains. She is also a former member of the Altar Guild of St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church in White Plains. In 2005, the Board of Directors of the YMCA of Central and Northern Westchester presented Sally with their annual Community Service Award, and in 2006 she was honored for Outstanding Long Service at the 90th Anniversary Celebration of the Women's Club of White Plains. Sally was the daughter of the former publisher of the Stamford Advocate, Schuyler Wood Gillespie Sr, and Grace Crowe Gillespie of Stamford, Connecticut. She was pre-deceased by her husband of 57 years, Robert Coe of White Plains in 2010. She is survived by four children, Sharon, Patricia, Laurie and David Coe; and five grandchildren, Grace, Robert and Andrew Glen; James Boyle; and Robert Coe. Visitation will be at Ballard Durand Funeral Home in White Plains on Monday, 13th May from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. A celebration of her life will be held at Christ Church, Greenwich on Tuesday 14th May at 11am, followed by interment at Arlington National Cemetery with her husband at a later date.
