James Bernard Cass passed away on October 22, 2012. He was 91 years old. Born January 3, 1921 in New York City, son of the late John and Anne Foley Cass, he spent his childhood and his adult life in Manhattan, the Bronx, Westchester County, and his last years in Skaneateles, NY. He graduated from Fordham Preparatory and received a BA in Physics from Fordham University in 1943, and his Masters in 1945. During World War II
, he joined the US Army
Corps of Engineers in 1945 at Columbia University, and was recruited by the US government to serve his country working under Einstein on the Manhattan Project in Oakridge, Tennessee. At the end of WWII, he studied at Cooper Union for his Professional Engineering License which he earned in 1958.
Mr. Cass worked as a civil engineer for the City of New York in the Department of Management and Budget from 1958 until his retirement in 1986. He taught physics at Bronx Community College during the 1960s and 70s.
Mr. Cass was a lifetime member of the New York Athletic Club and he was a former officer of the Elks Club
of New Rochelle, NY.
Despite his long struggle with Alzheimer's, our Dad never once forgot who his family was and what was most important in life. He was our beloved father and grandfather, treasured in every way. He had a pureness of spirit, a joy of life, a delightful wit, a twinkle in his eye, and a sweet wonderful smile. We will love and miss him forever, yet he will always be with us.
Mr. Cass is predeceased by his sweetheart Marilyn Dillon Cass, whom he married in 1954, as well as his son James and his siblings Edmund, Martin, and John Cass, and Dorothy Duggan.
Mr. Cass is survived by his children Tori-Ann Phelps-Bratt (Robert) of Skaneateles, NY; William (Cora) of New Rochelle, NY; and Todd (Claudia) of Pittsfield, MA; grandchildren Taryn Burress; Cassandra Anello; Jamie, Dillon, Orla, Shane, Lindsey and Carolyn Cass; and great grandchildren Ryan and Austin Burress, along with nieces and nephews and other family members.
Visiting Friday 2PM-4Pm & 7PM-9PM at Pelham Funeral Home, Pelham N.Y. Funeral mass Sat 9:30AM at Holy Name Church, 75 Lispenard Road, New Rochelle, NY. Internment will follow at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, N.Y.
