Barbara Algert Obituary
Barbara R. Algert, 78, formerly of Nyack, NY died Monday, March 18th at The Esplanade in Palisades, NY.
Born June 27, 1934 in Edwardsville, IL, she was the only child of the late Roy and Helen Renfro.
She met her husband John (Jack) D. Algert, also an only child, while attending Illinois College. They were married in 1953, and moved to Palisades, NY in 1959 to raise their family. Jack died in 1985.
After her husband's death, Barbara began a career in purchasing for the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University, retiring in 2001.
Barbara was an accomplished artist and frequently showed her work at the Rockland Center for the Arts and The Edward Hopper House Art Center. She was actively involved in the Palisades Presbyterian Church where she served as both a Deacon and Elder. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, with family being most important to her. Earlier this year she had a wonderful visit to Fredericksburg, VA where she was thrilled to meet her great granddaughter Rowan Paz Algert.
She is survived by her four children and their spouses respectively: David and Mary Beth Algert of Fredericksburg, VA, John Algert of Las Vegas, NV, Susan and David Dorsey of Fredericksburg, VA, and Peter and Kim Algert of Palisades, NY.
Grandchildren and their spouses include David and Jessica Algert, Daniel and Lesley Algert, Zachary R. Algert, Jessin Bacon, Andrew Bacon, Emily Algert, Michael Algert, Zachary W. Algert, Hayley Algert and great granddaughter Rowan Algert.
There will be a memorial service Saturday, March 23rd, 2pm at the Palisades Presbyterian Church. A reception will follow immediately in the Parrish.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or towards Cancer Research.
