Anthony Falcomer Obituary

Falcomer, Anthony

Anthony Falcomer, of West Nyack, NY, passed away on Sunday, November 3, 2013 at the age of 89. Anthony was born in Fairview, NJ on July 12, 1924 to Paul and Virginia Falcomer.

He is survived by his beloved and devoted wife, Marcella Falcomer; his two loving daughters, Stephanie and Silvia Falcomer; his five cherished grandchildren, Brittany, Robert, Frank, Maria and Peter; his sister, Alberta Cagnati and brother-in-law Vincent Cagnati, as well as nephews, nieces, and cousins in NJ, Canada and Italy.

Anthony was a kind and gentle man whose deep love for his wife and family never wavered. Marcella was the love of his life and they remained devoted to one another throughout their 57 years of marriage. He was a wonderful father to his two daughters, who will always have fond memories of his playfulness and wisdom. He had a great sense of humor and a beautiful smile. Anthony cared deeply about nature, the environment and helping others. His favorite pastimes included tending to his vegetable and flower gardens, reading, cooking and following his favorite baseball team; The Mets. He was a true renaissance man and enjoyed operas, Shakespeare and all genres of film and literature.

Anthony served in the Army during WWII and was stationed in the Pacific Islands. He graduated from Syracuse University with a Bachelor of Science degree and a Masters in Education from Columbia University. He was a gifted educator and began his career as a Middle School Science teacher in Seaford, NY. He went on to teach High School first in Mineola, NY and then as a Biology teacher at Nanuet High School where he remained until his retirement. Anthony was the kind of teacher students never forget. He loved being a teacher and often said his career had given him tremendous satisfaction. At Nanuet, he was voted Teacher of the Year, the senior yearbook was dedicated to him and he was an actor in the school play. He inspired a love of learning, nature and science to all of those lucky enough to be a part of his classroom.

After his retirement, Anthony continued to help others for many years, as a volunteer for the American Cancer Society's Stop Smoking Program. He was one of the most successful program facilitators in the history of the ACS Rockland Branch and was recognized with several awards of distinction, as well as, a story in the Journal News. He also joined Literacy Volunteers of America where he was able to help immigrants from many different countries learn English.

Anthony was a wonderful man who touched many lives, shared his gifts selflessly and left the world a much better place. He will be deeply missed.

Mr Falcomer was my biology teacher in '71 and I will always remember him as not only a great teacher but a very funny man who kept us entertained on a lot of topics like history and current events in addition to biology. I will not forget him or that great class.

I am a former student of Mr. Falcomer's from the 1980s and to this day remember him with great fondness and admiration for his deep passion for science and love of humanity. Mr. Falcomer definitely sparked my interest in biology which I continue to research and teach today. My sincerest condolences go out to the entire family for this great loss.
