Martin J. "Joe" Rowland of Point Lookout, NY, passed away on February 16th, 2017 at age 84, after a long illness. Born in New York City on October 26, 1932, he attended St. John's School, Xavier High School, and Manhattan College; he later took an MBA at Iona College.

Marty served as a navigator in the US Air Force, Strategic Air Command, and later in the Air National Guard for another 27 years, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. He worked in many capacities for Verizon over a period of 36 years. After 9/11 Marty volunteered for the Point Lookout-Lido Fire Department as an EMT and captained Rescue for 5 years. He is a lifetime member of the Department.

Marty was an avid skier and runner, finishing in multiple marathons. He loved animals, especially large dogs. He was predeceased by his wife Catherine Dunne Rowland in l985, and is survived by their four children: Marty Rowland of Boston, Bill of Thiells, NY, Chris of Dallas, TX, and Teresa of Pearl River, NY. He is also survived by his partner, Mary Farrell of Lenox, Massachusetts and cousins Ann Murphy and Thomas O'Brien. His four grandchildren are Catherine, Gregory, Connor, and Emily Rowland.

The visitation will be held on Monday, February 20th at Assumma-Shankey Funeral Home, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. The funeral Mass is on Tuesday, February 21st at St. Anthony's Church, 36 W. Nyack St., Nanuet, at 10a.m., followed immediately by burial at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Valhalla, NY.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
