Mary Travis Obituary

Travis, Mary Kathryn

Mary Kathryn "Kathy" Travis left us on August 16th at Northern Westchester Hospital in Mount Kisco, NY, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. During her illness, she showed great bravery and will always be an inspiration to us all. Kathy was born September 7, 1955 in Peekskill, NY, the second daughter and third child of Helen Burchetta and Robert Davis; she was married to Robert Travis in 1978. Kathy received her undergraduate degree from Manhattan College and her graduate degree from Manhattanville, and had a successful career at I.B.M. After I.B.M., Kathy pursued her passions for gardening, travel and volunteering. She spent countless joy-filled days at Wildflower Island at Teatown Reservation, identifying native plant species for guest tours and friends, and was a member of New Horizons Garden club where she served as secretary. She treasured May and October trips to Mt. Desert Island, Maine, walking the trails with field guide in hand, eagerly seeking out new and familiar plants in the wild. She also found great joy in the gardens at Lasdon, and the Asticou, Thuya, and Wildflowers of Acadia gardens on Mt. Desert. At her home Kathy cultivated plants both indoors and out, expertly tending to her orchids and savoring her time in the wildflower gardens surrounding her home. Kathy was a volunteer at Boys and Girls Club in Mt. Kisco where she received the honor of volunteer of the year. She also gave her time to Hudson Valley Hospital and conducted wildlife exhibits for children at Teatown, where she delighted in displaying various critters for her young audiences. Kathy is survived by her husband Robert, mother Helen, her beloved dachshund "Pearldog" and siblings Bob Davis and wife Patty, Rich Davis and wife Gerilyn, Nancy Davis-Ziegelbauer, Steve Davis and Carol Davis. Her in-laws include Ken Travis Sr., Ken Travis Jr. and wife Marge, Maura Jean Travis-Haviland and husband Charles, and David Travis and wife Judy, along with many nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions in Kathy's memory can be made to the American Cancer Society or Teatown Reservation in Yorktown, NY. She will be forever in our hearts. My sincere condolances to Bobby and family. Tho I didn't personally know Kathy, she sounds like she was a very special lady and treasured by her family and friends.

The Manhattan College alumni community shares the grief, and is now praying for our fellow alumni and the family at this time. The Alumni Office has been informed. As well as the Jasper Jottings community that I personally can reach. We are all a little poorer now. "No man is an island, entire of itself ... any man's death diminishes me". We are sorry for your loss.
