Eugene Edward Cantwell, of Blauvelt, NY, passed away at his home on Sunday, October 13, 2013. He was born on June 30, 1922 in Blauvelt, the son of the late Raymond and Edith Cantwell. He attended the Greenbush Academy and Nyack High School. A veteran of World War II, he was a member of the 3rd Marine Division and saw action during the Bougainville Campaign in the South Pacific. He was a former President of the Blauvelt Lions Club and Blue Hill Golf Course Advisory Board. In addition, he was a lifelong member of the Greenbush Presbyterian Church of Blauvelt. Gene worked for the Red & Tan bus company, was the proud owner of Blauvelt Wine & Liquor and in his later years worked a gang mower at the Blue Hill Golf Course until the ripe old age of 90!
He was known for his sense of humor, work ethic and dedication to his community, family and church. He was predeceased by his brothers, Raymond and Roger.
Gene is survived by his wife and love of his life of more than sixty-nine years, Dixie; his older sister, Virginia of Myrtle Beach, SC; his son, Randy and daughter-in-law, Gerry of South Portland, Maine; his grandson, Matthew & Gina Cantwell of Thurmont, MD; his granddaughter, Heather Cantwell Finocchio and Anthony Finocchio of Boston, MA and his grandchildren, Nicole & Kyle of Thurmont, MD and many nephews and nieces. He will be missed by his family and many friends. A life well lived and long in years.
There will be a service at Greenbush Presbyterian Church, 614 Western Highway, Blauvelt, NY on Friday, Oct. 18 at 10:00am, followed by internment at the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Greenbush Presbyterian Church would be appreciated
