SCOTT, JOHNJohn Scott was born on August 15, 1916. His parents were Lucille and Louis Scott. He attended Nyack Schools and studied music privately, playing clarinet in the first Symphony of Rockland County in 1932-33. He played sax and clarinet in various dance orchestras of the 30's and 40's, the Big Band Era, including Eddie Sauter's first band, then played with Eddie Munn's, Jack Dailey's, Wes Slade's and other groups, clubbing around Rockland and the metropolitan region. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific arena. He first worked as a law clerk for Judge Benjamin Haas of Nyack, then was employed by Public Service in New Jersey and later by Rockland Light and Power as an appliance salesman. For more than 35 years he worked in sales and marketing in the north for various book publishers in New York and Philadelphia. A life member of the Historical Society of Rockland County, he served as trustee, vice-president, executive editor of South of the Mountains, senior historian and chaired the publications committee and the historic sites preservation committee that placed more than 50 historic markers throughout Rockland. He wrote numerous historical articles for the Society's publications and for newspapers and periodicals and was a founding member of both the Historians Roundtable and the Geological Society of Rockland County and remained on the Senior Historical Committee. He was founding member and trustee of the West Nyack Free Library and served two terms as president of the board. In November 1990, he was honored as "Man of the Year" at the 27th annual awards dinner of the Stony Point chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. John was predeceased by wife, Julia Sherwood Scott in 1996 and is survived by a daughter, Linda Scott Lowry of Gastonia, NC, a granddaughter, Kim Taggart, two grandsons, J.C. Lowry and Michael Scott Lowry and four great-grandchildren, Mason Scott Lowry, Madison Grace Lowry, Jeffery Taggart and Elizabeth Taggart. A son, also Liland Charles Scott predeceased him. Donations may be made in John's name to United Hospice of Rockland, Friends of Nyacks, Historical Society of Rockland County or the
