JOSEPH B. SHORTLIDGE

SHORTLIDGE, JOSEPH B.Joseph B. Shortlidge, 88, of Barnard, Vermont and formerly of Chappaqua, NY, died March 27 at Lebanon Center Nursing Home. Born in Upper Darby, PA, March 24, 1917, the son of Herschel and Eva Bacon Shortlidge. He attended Upper Darby High School, where he excelled in Track and Field. During WWII, he trained pilots for the Army Air Corps and was honorably discharged with the rank of Captain. He started his career in the foods business in 1938 as a retail salesman with Clapp's Baby Food that was then acquired by American Home Foods. He rose to district manager, general sales manager, Vice President and then President of American Home Foods. He retired to Barnard, VT in 1975, where he was a member of Rotary International for over 20 years. He was a member of the Woodstock Country Club and also president of its Board of Governors in the late 1970's. He was a member of the Woodstock Union High School Board. In 1980. he joined the Board for the Homestead on the Finance Committee and stayed in that position for many years. He enjoyed golf, skiing, playing pool and gardening. Predeceased by three wives: Natalie, Leona and Doris; two brothers: Herschel, Jr. and Frazier and his oldest son, David Newell Shortlidge. Three sons: Todd Bacon of Barnard; Barry Philip of Woodstock and Peter Chandler of Lake Helen, FL survive him. He leaves three grandsons; three granddaughters, stepsons and daughters, step grandchildren and a step great-grandson. Calling hours will be held at Cabot Funeral Home in Woodstock, VT, March 30, Wednesday from 6 pm to 8 pm. Religious Services and Burial at Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla, NY on the following day at 1 pm.
