Obituary Condolences Flowers

Rand, Dr. Joseph J.

Dr. Joseph J. Rand of Orangeburg, NY and Fort Myers, FL passed away early Sunday morning at the age of 74 after a long battle with prostate cancer. Dr. Rand was born in 1938 in Brooklyn and graduated in 1960 from St. Francis College, where he was a member of the Duns Scotus Honor Society and president of the Phi Rho Pi fraternity. He received his medical degree from Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn in 1964, interned at Long Island College Hospital, and finished his residency at Boston City Hospital in Massachusetts.

Dr. Rand moved to Rockland County in the late 1960s, forming one of the first endocrinology practices in the county and starting a long affiliation with Nyack Hospital, where he helped create the hospital's Diabetic Unit in the mid-1970s. In recognition of his dedication to the hospital and his patients, he was awarded the prestigious "Physician of the Year" award in the early 1990s by Nyack Hospital and the Nyack Hospital Medical. He was similarly honored in 1992 by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation for his commitment to helping patients suffering from the disease. His devotion to helping the needs of others included his participation in humanitarian missions to Nicaragua following its devastating 1973 earthquake and to Haiti with his family and church in 2002.

Dr. Rand will be remembered for his generosity of spirit, his sense of humor, his passion for golf, and most importantly his deep love for his friends and family. He was devoted to his beloved wife Marsha, whom he met while she was getting her nursing degree at Long Island College Hospital in 1965. They were married on August 6, 1966, and lived in Rockland County for most of their 46-year marriage. He loved, and was deeply loved, by his four sons, three daughters-in-law, and his five cherished grandchildren: Joseph and Linie Rand of Nyack, and their son Joseph ("Jake"); Greg and Leah Rand of White Plains, and their daughter Diana and son Patrick; Matt and Jen Rand of West Nyack, and their son Joseph and daughter Juliana; and Daniel Rand of Orangeburg and Hoboken, NJ. He will also be mourned by his three brothers and their wives, Sal and Agnes Rand of North Fort Myers, FL, Bill and Marguerite Rand of Copiague, NY, and Richard and Linda Rand of Fort Myers, FL; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Services will be held at Michael J. Higgins Funeral Services, located at 321 South Main Street, New City, NY, on Tuesday from 2-4 p.m. and from 6-9 p.m. The funeral service will be on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 128 Parrott Road in West Nyack, NY. Contributions in his memory can be made to United Hospice of Rockland,
