MARY CANBERG Obituary

Ms. Mary Canberg, violinist, conductor and teacher, passed away in her home in West Nyack, NY on Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at the age of 86. Her violin studies were primarily with Michael Press and Hans Letz, and she studied both in her native Michigan and at the Juilliard School. As a young professional musician in New York, she gave Town Hall recitals, and was a string quartet colleague of several members of the New York Philharmonic, including John Corigliano, Sr. and Martin Ormandy. She attended and regularly contributed to the musical worship at the Brick Presbyterian Church on Park Avenue, often in collaboration with organist, Clarence Dickinson. As a resident of Rockland County, she was the founder of the Youth String Orchestra, and greatly enriched the lives of countless young musicians with her teaching which uniquely blended enthusiasm with discipline. She is survived by many devoted students who have pursued musical careers, including cellist, Ronald Thomas, and violinists: Joseph Lin and James Buswell. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, June 19 at 2:00 pm in the Grace Baptist Church of Nanuet, NY. JOSEPH W. SORCE FUNERAL HOME, INC. 728 W. Nyack Rd., W. Nyack (845)358-4433
