Mary Twomey Obituary
Sister Mary Louise Twomey, OP, of the Dominican Sisters, Sparkill, New York, died on November 5, 2016 in Siena Hall, Sparkill, NY. Born in New York, NY on June 26, 1932, Joan was the daughter of Frank and Louise Sommer Twomey. She entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill on September 7, 1952 and received the name Sister Mary Louise. She professed her first vows in 1954 and her final vows in 1959. Sister Mary Louise received a BS in Education, Fordham University, New York in 1960 and her MS in Religious Education from Fordham University, New York in 1987. Sister Mary Louise was a teacher in the Archdiocese of NY at St. John Chrysostom School (1954-59) and St. Rose of Lima School, New York, NY (1959-61). In 1961 Sr. Mary Louise went to Pakistan where she ministered to the Pakistani people as teacher in the Dominican Convent School (1961-64); St. Dominic Urdu School (1964-66) and in Loreto (1966-70). From 1970-71, Sister attended Atenao University in Manila then returned to Pakistan and from 1971-81 was at the Pastoral Institute-Multan teaching and giving leadership training to catechists and junior professed sisters and novices. From 1981-1986 Sister ministered to the Pakistani people in the Diocese of Mutan. Upon her return to the United States, Sister Mary Louise served as Pastoral Minister at St. John's Parish, Bronx, NY (1988-98) and was the Project Manager at Thorpe Village, Sparkill, NY (1998-2013) before retiring to Dominican Convent.
Sister Mary Louise is predeceased by her parents Frank and Louise. She is 'Survived by her sister Virginia (William) Corey, brother Francis (Rosemary) Twomey and several nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel, Sparkill, NY, on Thursday, November 10, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. Visitation is on Wednesday, November 9, 2016 from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Dominican Convent, 175 Rte. 340, Sparkill, NY. Interment will be in St. Agnes Cemetery. Arrangements are by Higgins Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers please send donations to: Dominican Sisters, at the above address, attention - Sister Mary Murray, President.
