Pauline H. Hough, 91, passed away peacefully with family by her side on February 13, 2013 at Cortlandt Healthcare. "Polly" lived in Chappaqua, NY for 48 years. After contracting Alzheimer's, she lived for many years in the homes of her three daughters.
She was born in Worcester, MA on March 24, 1921 to Carl and Ida Hagberg. After graduating from North High School and Salter Secretarial School, she worked for a bank for several years and then married Donald W. Hough on April 8, 1944. They lived in Cambridge, MA and Falls Church, VA before settling in Chappaqua in 1957, where they raised three daughters.
The center of Polly's life was always family and friends. She was a member and deacon of the Presbyterian Church of Mt. Kisco, where the "Christian Education Center" was given in her honor. She spent a lifetime volunteering for many organizations including the Elizabeth Milbank Anderson Home and Chappaqua Drama Group. She loved traveling and was a wonderful cook, especially famous for Swedish pancakes. Her talents included sketching, painting, crafting silver jewelry, sewing, braiding rugs and repairing antique quilts. Having a friend over for a chat or hosting a dinner party for 30 people came naturally to her. She excelled at making everyone feel welcome including a Fresh Air Child who spent several summers with her family.
After her husband died in 1976, Polly began a babysitting career that spanned 28 years, providing love and warmth for hundreds of local children. She was everyone's favorite babysitter, delighting children by teaching them card games, singing songs, taking them on hikes, and cooking Swedish pancakes. For everyone whose lives Polly touched, she set a remarkable example for living a humble life and loving your neighbor.
She is survived by two daughters, Christina Hutchins of Falmouth, Maine and Constance Hough Cronin of Cold Spring, New York. She had three grandchildren, Cale, Dane and J.D., sons-in-law, Mark Hutchins, John Cronin and Thomas Riggs, and many beloved nieces and nephews. Her daughter, Cameron Hough, passed away in May, 2012. Polly was also predeceased by Donald Hough, her husband, a brother Roland Hagberg, and a sister, Christine Dresser. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
