LTC Tong Seng Tjoa, M.D., USAR (Ret.) of Pomona, died on Friday, April 26, 2013 at the age of 78.
He was born on December 6, 1934, in Makassar, Indonesia, to Tjiong Lok Tjoa and Jen Tzu Yen. He attended Diocesan Boys School in Hong Kong and Christelijk Lyceum in Amsterdam. He graduated from Vrije Universiteit Medical School and practiced medicine in the Netherlands prior to coming to the United States in 1965 and interning at Yale-affiliated Norwalk Hospital in Connecticut. Of the medical specialties, Dr. Tjoa found the operating room most challenging and rewarding. He entered a surgical residency at Bronx Lebanon Medical Center, completed an anesthesiology residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and clinical fellowship at New York Medical College, Metropolitan Hospital/Flower and Fifth Avenue Hospital, then joined the Anesthesia Department of Nyack Hospital, later becoming Senior Attending Physician and Assistant Director. He was Director of Anesthesiology at Butterfield Hospital in Cold Spring from 1982 to 1993. Volunteering for the United States Army Reserve, he was assigned to the 74th Field Hospital, and served in hospitals at West Point, in Germany, and at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, Belgium, until his honorable discharge in 1995 as a Lieutenant Colonel. Upon retirement, he became an avid bridge player, attaining Silver Life Master rank in the American Contract Bridge League. He traveled extensively and competed in regional, North American, and international bridge tournaments. Author of several Mah Jong books, Dr. Tjoa frequently gave lectures on the entertaining and social aspects of playing the Chinese classic game.
Dr. Tjoa is survived by Carole, his loving wife of 43 years; sons Richard Tjoa and his wife Tanya of Suffern, Michael Tjoa of New York; grandchildren Nicholas and Kathryn; sisters Li Tsen Tjoa of Jakarta, Indonesia, Siang Tjie Siem of Konigslutter, Germany, and Miao Ling Tjoa of Amsterdam; a brother Tong Beng Tjoa of Ochlocknee, Georgia; nieces and nephews in Canada, Germany, Indonesia, Singapore, California, Florida, and New York.
Dr. Tjoa was a member of the American Medical Association and New York State Society of Anesthesiologists. His friends and colleagues remember him as a man deeply devoted to his family and country, and as a physician truly dedicated to his profession.
