Thomas J. O'Boyle Obituary
O'Boyle, Thomas J.

Thomas J. O'Boyle, a beloved Irish-American Catholic gentleman, died on May 2, 2012 after a brief illness. He was 89. Tom was a devoted brother, uncle, trustee of St. Peter's Parish & School, and lifelong resident of Yonkers. He dedicated his entire career to community banking and in 1992 retired from The Manhattan Savings Bank (now HSBC) as vice president and manager of the South Broadway branch. The Catholic ideals of charity and faith were instilled in Tom at a young age. He began his education at St. Peter's Parish School and graduated from Cathedral Prep HS and the American Banking Institute. His deep Catholic faith remained unwavering, as exemplified by his daily attendance at Mass. The spiritual and academic welfare of the children of St. Peter's parish remained, for the entirety of Tom's life, a cause most dear to his heart. His dedication and generosity in this regard were manifested most recently in his service as the Financial Chair for the school's 100th anniversary in 2011 and his marching under the school's banner in the 2012 Yonkers St. Patrick's Day Parade. Tom was proud to be celebrating the diamond anniversary of his 1937 graduation from St. Peter's School this year, on which occasion he received an award of appreciation for his lifetime of devoted service to the parish. Tom was an ardent reader and sports fan, with unwavering allegiance to the NY Yankees, NY Giants and Notre Dame Football and Basketball. He loved gardening and took great pride in the beautiful assortment of flowers that adorned his front lawn. Tom is survived by his loving sisters, Cecelia (O'Boyle) Favareau and Lillian (O'Boyle) Butler; beloved nieces Maryellen Favareau, Marie Ellen (Terry) Maher & husband James, Colleen Johnson and Carol Butler; nephews John, Donald & wife Emi, & Thomas Favareau, James Terry, and Larry Butler & wife Ann; as well as grandnephews James D. Terry and Daniel Maher, and grandnieces Katherine Maher and Christina Maher, whom he encouraged and supported enthusiastically in all their endeavors and who love him dearly. Tom was predeceased by his beloved parents Anthony O. & Mary Ellen (McHugh) O'Boyle, brothers Anthony A. and Francis O'Boyle, sister Marie (O'Boyle) Terry, niece Marguerite (O'Connor) Terry, and longtime companion Ruth W. Jones. In lieu of flowers, the family requests consideration of donations to St. Peter's School, 204 Hawthorne Ave, Yonkers, NY 10705, which will fund a scholarship to be established in Tom's memory.
