Daniel Lagano, age 58 of West Harrison, New York and San Francisco California passed away peacefully on February 8, 2014 after a long illness. He was born in White Plains NY on January 16, 1956. Dan is survived by his father Santo (Sam), his brother Stephen and his wife Laura and their three children, Victoria, Isabella and Zachary. He is also survived by his former wife, Constance Cole. He is predeceased by his mother Antoinette
Dan graduated from F.D. Roosevelt High School in Hyde Park, New York. He received his Bachelor Degree in Sociology from Siena College and his master's degree from San Francisco State University.
He had a distinguished career in the nursing home industry as an assistant administrator and director of social services. In the early 90's as a speaker at the National Update AIDs Conference held in San Francisco HIV/Aids. Dan was in the forefront of advocating for the emerging need for more HIV aids units for the incarnated.
Dan was a very devoted and caring person always seeking to help others; he was a consummate "social worker for life". It started in college working with abused and wayward children in the orphanages and extended to the nursing homes caring for the elderly. Dan's caring personality also carried forward to the San Francisco Aids Foundation where he tirelessly advocated for the HIV/Aids population.
Anybody who knew Dan, knew of his love of music, attending concerts and Led Zeppelin. He was a world class collector of Led Zeppelin memorabilia and music. He was an avid Major League Baseball fan with an unbelievable memory for the nuances and records of the game. Having cherished his time living in San Francisco, he became a life-long Oakland Athletics fan. So much a fan, his friends referred to him as "Oakland Dan".
In spite of his fatigue from his illness, Dan became a prolific story teller and writer reflecting on his life. He took great solace in his writings and poems.
Dan's love of life and strong bonds with his family and friends, and his drive to help others in need will always live on in hearts.
Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Wednesday 10am at St. Anthony of Padua Church in West Harrison. Friends may call from 2-4pm and 7-9pm Tuesday at the Ballard-Durand Funeral Home, 2 Maple Avenue at South Broadway, White Plains, NY. Entombment will be in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, NY.
