Obituary Condolences

Smith, Melvin L.

Melvin L. Smith, 85, of Somers passed away peacefully early in the morning of Monday, June 2, 2014 at Northern Westchester Hospital. He is preceded in death by his wife Helen T. Smith, brother Chester Smith and sister-in-law Betty Smith, and sons Eric and Bruce Smith.

Born April 30, 1929 in Ossining, NY, Mel married the love of his life, Helen, on February 25, 1951. He then served in the US Army as a Sargent in Korea from 1951 to 1952. After returning home, Mel and Helen moved to Somers to raise three sons. Mel worked for most of his life as an operating engineer for IBOE Local 137 and most recently was a shop foreman for Yonkers Contracting Corporation. He was an accomplished machinist and toolmaker. Mel also volunteered as a Boy Scout leader for Somers Troup 1 for many years and enjoyed camping with his family throughout his life. In his retirement, he devoted his time to his family, traveling with his wife, and studying, repairing, and making clock and watch repair tools, about which he was a nationally recognized authority. He was also a dedicated member of the Mount Hope United Methodist Church in Lake Mahopac.

"Pop," as he was affectionately known to his family, is survived by his son, Brian Smith and wife Karen Smith of Candia, NH, daughter-in-law Patricia Smith of Brewster, NY, as well as his five grandchildren Sean, Amanda, Lauren, Megan, and Erin Smith. Pop was a patient teacher and a generous and loving friend to all who met him, and will be dearly missed by many.

The family will receive friends at Clark Associates Funeral Home in Katonah, NY, on Friday, June 6, from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, June 7, at 11 am, followed by interment at Ivandell Cemetery in Somers. In honor of his work at the church, contributions may be made to Mount Hope United Methodist Church at P.O. Box 381, Mahopac Falls, NY 10542.
