Fr. Thomas Murphy, O.F.M. Cap.

The Capuchin Franciscan friars of the Province of St. Mary mourn the death of their brother Fr. Thomas Murphy who died on July 12, 2014 in Yonkers, New York at the age of 72.

Fr. Thomas the son of Thomas and Frances White-Murphy was born in Brooklyn, NY on August 11, 1941. He attended P.S. 147 and St. Catherine grammar schools in St. Albans, NY [1947-50]; Sacred Heart, Cambria Heights, NY [1950-55] and Glenclyffe High School, Garrison, NY [1955-1959].

Fr. Thomas entered the Capuchins in 1962; professed perpetual vows in 1968 and was ordained to the priesthood on June 5, 1971.

He received his BA in Philosophy from St. Anthony College, Hudson, NH [1966]; Bachelor of Divinity from Capuchin Theological Seminary, Garrison, NY [1969]; Master of Arts from Maryknoll School of Theology, Ossining, NY [1970]; and Master of Science in Education [1980].

Fr. Thomas served as a parochial assistant at several Capuchin parishes: Our Lady Queen of Angels in Harlem, NYC [1971-73; 1975-76; and 1982-86]; San Antonio, Rio Piedras, PR [1974-75]; St. Michael, Brooklyn, NY [1976-78]; and St. John the Baptist, NYC [1980-82].

Fr. Thomas began a long career in ministering to the sick and dying when he assumed his first assignment as a hospital chaplain at the Veterans Hospital, Northport, NY [1978-80]. He remained a chaplain for the rest of his life: Kateri Nursing Home, NYC [1986-89] and St. Joseph Medical Center and Nursing Home, Yonkers, NY [1990-2013]. He resided with the Capuchin fraternity of Sacred Heart Friary in Yonkers, NY.

Following a tragic fall in May 2013, Fr. Thomas remained at St. Joseph Nursing Home until the time of his death. Fr. Thomas was survived by two sisters Denise Gregoretti of North Massapequa, NY; Pat Golding of Palm Harbor, FL and one brother Brian Murphy of Yonkers, NY.

Viewing will be held at St. Clare Friary, 110 Shonnard Place, Yonkers, NY 10703 on Tuesday, July 15, 2014 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 7:00-9:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sacred Heart Church, 110 Shonnard Place, Yonkers, NY on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations will be grateful accepted for the care of our senior friars at St. Clare Friary, 110 Shonnard Place, Yonkers, New York 10703.
