GEORGE M. BERGERMAN

BERGERMAN, GEORGE M. The Honorable George M. Bergerman, of Piermont, NY, passed away on Friday, June 24, 2005. He was 70 years old. Judge Bergerman was born and raised in New York City. He attended Horace Mann School, Trinity College and New York University School of Law. He received his J.D. degree in 1959. After graduating from law school, Justice Bergerman served a tour of duty in the United States Air Force and upon discharge went to work for the American Arbitration Association. In 1961, Justice Bergerman came to Rockland County where he entered private practice with the firm of Granik, Garson, Silverman and Nowicki. In 1966, he formed a partnership with Jacob K. Wexler and was engaged in private practice until he became a full-time judge. Justice Bergerman's public service began in 1970 when he became a town attorney in the Town of Orangetown. In 1975, he was elected Town Justice where he served until he became a Family Court Judge in 1985. In 1987, Justice Bergerman was elected to the Supreme Court and was reelected in 2001. Justice Bergerman was a member of the New York State Bar Association, the Association of the Bar of the City of New York and the Rockland County Bar Association. Justice Bergerman was an active participant in the Rockland County Community as a member and Past President of the Pearl River Rotary, as a member of the Board of Nyack Hospital and as a member and Past Master of the Masons. Throughout the years he found time to play "At Golf", cheer on the New York Giants and enjoy time with his grandchildren. Judge Bergerman is survived by his wife Nancy Bergerman. He is also survived by his children Laura Benoit, Danny Costello and his wife Maureen and Kevin Costello; his five grandchildren Alyson Benoit, Danny Jr., Kylie, Jimmy and Johnny Costello; his sister Ann (Bergerman) Brambley and his nephew Andrew Joor. Visiting hours are scheduled for Monday, June 27, 2005 from 6:30 pm to 9 pm only. A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family.
