Tierney, John Joseph

John Joseph Tierney, 67, formerly of New Rochelle, NY, died Wednesday. John was born to the late James Tierney and Margaret (Quigley) Tierney on July 5, 1944. As a child he attended Saint Gabriel's School and served as the head alter boy at Saint Gabriel's Church. He excelled as a basketball player and received a scholarship to play at Blessed Sacrament High School. After high school, John proudly served in the U.S. Navy where he was stationed on the U.S.S. Shenandoah. John spent the next 38 years working for Metro North Railroad. He retired in 2005 as an assistant chief rail traffic controller in the operations control center in the main terminal in Grand Central. He was responsible for the Hudson, Harlem, and New Haven division trains. After John's retirement he relocated to PGA Village in Port St. Lucie, FL. He was an avid golfer and cherished the time he spent with family and friends. John was an extremely loyal and devoted friend. John was loved by all who knew him. John is survived by his sister, Patricia Martin, four brothers, James (wife Maryann), Kevin (wife Mary), William (wife Judy), and Donald. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and his beloved Aunt Kac Coyne. John was fortunate enough to be blessed with the unwavering friendship of Kevin and Marylou Adrian. He was pre-deceased by his brother-in-law Raymond Martin. The family would like to express their most sincere gratitude to Dr. Mercedes Castiel and Dr. Michelle Boyar at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to "Butterflies From Jodie", 31 President Street, New Rochelle, NY 10801. Viewing at Lloyd Maxcy and Sons Beauchamp Chapel, Inc. in New Rochelle on Tuesday from 4-9pm. Mass to be held on Wednesday 9:30 am at St. Gabriel's Church. Naval Honor Guard to follow at Ferncliff Cemetery.
