Godwin, Howard

Howard Gibson Godwin, Jr., 67, passed away peacefully at his home in Tarrytown, N.Y. on April 1, 2012. The son of the late Howard Gibson and Nettie Mae Motes Godwin, he was born on April 28, 1944, in Harnett County, N.C.A graduate of Dunn High School, he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was a Morehead Scholar and a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Chi Psi Fraternities. He also served on the Board of Visitors for the University.Howard attended Duke University School of Law, where he earned his Juris Doctorate in 1969. At the time of his death, he had worked for 42 years as a corporate lawyer, and partner since 1978, at Sidley Austin LLP in New York City. He was also a member of the New York State Bar Association.An avid sports fan, particularly of high school athletics, Howard was the sole sponsor of the Sleepy Hollow High School Annual Holiday Basketball Tournament for the past 20 years and played a major role in the Sleepy Hollow High School Sports Association.He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Mimi McDonough Godwin, children Elizabeth Godwin and Anne Godwin Cauthren, his son-in-law, Benjamin Cauthren, and his sister, Virginia Anne Godwin Carboy. He was predeceased by his son, William Godwin. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 7-9PM and Wednesday from 2-4PM and 7-9PM at Dwyer & Vanderbilt Funeral Home, 90 North Broadway, Tarrytown.Liturgy of the Word and Commendation will be at 10:30am on Thursday, April 5 at the Church of the Magdelene 525 Bedford Road Pocantico Hills, N.Y. Interment to follow at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Sleepy Hollow.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations may be sent to either the Foundation for the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns with notation in support of the Howard Godwin Athletics Fund, 210 North Broadway, Sleepy Hollow, N.Y. 10591 or in memory of Howard Godwin to the University of North Carolina's School of Journalism and Mass Communication, Office of Development, Campus Box 3365, Chapel Hill, NC 27599.
