Fitzsimmons, Walter

Walter Fitzsimmons, 89, of Pompano Beach, FL, (formerly of Tappan), passed away on August 8, 2012. Walter was born Jan. 18, 1923 in Brooklyn NY. He moved his family to Rockland in 1967 after living many years in Jamaica, Queens NY. He was predeceased by his siblings Thomas, William and Dorothy; his son Walter ("Rhett"); and daughter-in-law Linda. He served in the US Army Air Corp, having attained the rank of second lieutenant, piloting the P-51 Mustang. He then earned his Bachelors degree in accounting from St John's University. In 1985, after 37 years of service, he retired from the New York Telephone Company/Verizon as a District Accounting Manager. He then moved to Florida where he enjoyed his 27 years of retirement with dear friends, fellow golfers, Elks, Moose, and Veterans.

Walter is survived by his wife Patricia; children Pat Pfeister (Donald Herbst), Jane Lavelle, Sue Pereira (Amory), Barbara, and Jim; grandchildren Rick Pfeister (Sarah), Brien Pfeister (Nina Jakubowski), Casey and Lorell Pereira, and Jamielyn Fitzsimmons; and great-grandchildren Riley, Liam, Emma and Noelle Pfeister.

Arrangements were private and Inurnment was held. Memorial contributions can be made to the Pompano Beach Elks, Lodge # 1898, 700 N.E 10th St., Pompano Beach, FL 33060, where Walter was a 25-year member.
