Bachmann, Matthew William

Matthew William (Bill) Bachmann, 65, returned to God on March 14, 2013 following a courageous struggle with Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA) combined with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP). Bill led a life of silence over the last two years, although his mind remained sharp and he continued to laugh at jokes and stories until his peaceful departure.

The son of the Mary Elizabeth (Moore) Bachmann and the late Matthew W. Bachmann, Bill grew up in Thornwood, NY. He attended Holy Rosary School from its opening in 1955 and graduated from Archbishop Stepinac High School in 1966. He graduated from MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Illinois.

Bill made his home in Oak Park, Illinois, together with his wife of 27 years, Jane (Roubal) and their son, Matthew. There he coached baseball and basketball teams throughout his son's childhood, and was active in St. Giles Catholic Church and the Oak Park Tennis Association. He worked in the insurance and health fields throughout his career, most recently as a contract analyst for Health Care Service Corporation, until his retirement in 2010.

Bill was known and universally respected for his love of animals, his generosity to everyone, and his loyal devotion to his family and friends.

In addition to his wife, son and mother, he is survived by his three sisters and their spouses, Mary Elizabeth (Molly) and Al Wakeman of Albany, NY, Eileen and Craig Olsen of Daytona Beach, FL, and Kathleen and Scott Wissemann of Sayville, NY, and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Giles Church on Saturday, March 23rd. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Oak Park Tennis Association, P.O. Box 2279, Oak Park, IL 60303 where a memorial scholarship and tournament are to be established in his name, or to the Oak Park Animal Care League.
