Hattar, Samir J.
Samir J. Hattar, a life long resident of Yonkers, passed away suddenly on September 1, 2013. He was 36 years old. Sammy is survived by his beloved wife, Piera Hattar (nee Bernardini) and his cherished son Christian J. Hattar. Sammy was born on July 17, 1977 in Yonkers to Miriam Hattar and the late Farah Ayed Hattar. Sammy was the Vice President, Mission Budget & Operations at The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and was greatly admired and respected by his friends and colleagues. He had previously served for nearly 9 years as a supervisor in the pathology department at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where he provided analytical and research support on groundbreaking research projects focused on solid tumors. At LLS he began as Associate Director of Research in 2008 and was quickly promoted to a Director in 2010. Sammy earned a Bachelor's Degree from Fordham University and an MSPH with a concentration in biostatistics and epidemiology from the Rockefeller University. Sammy graduated from Gorton High School in 1995 where he was an All County Football Player. Sammy brought tremendous joy to his family and friends and to every person who had the great fortune of being in his presence during his brief time on earth. Sammy was a truly caring and compassionate person, who always put his family first and was committed to making his community a better place. His family and friends are heartbroken by the loss of this brilliant and kind human being. Sammy was a truly devoted and caring husband, father, son, brother, uncle, nephew and friend. Sammy was a long time parishioner and supporter of St. Mary's Good Shepherd Church in Yonkers. Sammy is survived by his loving wife Piera, and son Christian of Yonkers, his adoring mother Miraim Hattar and beloved siblings, Samar Hattar of Yonkers, Irene Jacobson of Purchase, Jacqueline Hattar of Eastchester, Marlene Masiello of the Bronx, Christine Montero of Yorktown, Linda Ciarletta of Eastchester, and Ronald Hattar of Yorktown. He is also survived by his loving in laws, Joseph and Margie Bernardini of Yonkers. Sammy's memory is also cherished by his 14 nieces and nephews, Jennifer, Nancy, Kelly, Christopher, Jillian, Michael, Brandon, John Jr., Julia, Anthony, Alexa, Ava, Alexandra, and Jason. Additionally he is survived by his brothers in law, Mike, Jeff, John, Ray, Anthony and Michael and his sisters in law Nicole and Julia. He is also survived by many cousins, aunts, uncles, and dear friends. A Mass of Christian Burial will held on Thursday September 5, 2013 at 10am at St. Mary's Good Shepherd Church in Yonkers, NY . Interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Yonkers. The family will receive friends on Wednesday September 4, 2013 at Whalen & Ball Funeral Home from 4pm to 8pm. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in memory of Sammy to Christian Hattar or Piera Hattar to provide for Christian's education.
