DOROTHY HUFF OBERHAUS, renowned scholar, teacher, writer and lecturer died peacefully at home on September 5, 2013. Lover of American literature and especially Emily Dickinson, she devoted a major part of her academic career to analyzing Dickinson's complete works, especially her magnum opus, the Forty Fascicles. Dickinson was the subject of Dr. Oberhaus's Master's thesis, her Ph.D dissertation, and her first book, Emily Dickinson's Fascicles: Method & Meaning, Pennsylvania State Press, 1995. She also wrote dozens of articles and gave numerous lectures on Dickinson throughout the U.S. and Europe. She received her B.A. from Ohio Wesleyan University, her M.A. from Sarah Lawrence College, and her Ph,D from City University of New York Graduate Center. She began her teaching career in 1972 at Mercy College, Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. and later served as Chair of the Mercy College Curriculum Committee and Chair of its English Department Curriculum Committee. Mercy College honored her and her beloved husband, Ed, at the 32nd Annual Mercy College Trustees Dinner this year at the Plaza Hotel in New York City with its Lifetime Achievement Award. She was a founding member of the Cupola Society, an advisory group at the Emily Dickinson Museum in Amherst, MA, and lectured frequently on Dickinson at Amherst events . At the time of her death she was completing her second book on the Dickinson Fascicles. Surviving are her husband, Ed Oberhaus, of Bronxville, NY, her daughter Ann Mackin, her son-in law Timothy Mackin, and her two grandchildren, Kate and Sean Mackin, all of Chagrin Falls, OH. A memorial service will be held at Christ Church, Bronxville, on Saturday, September 28, at 2 pm.
