Jesse Basnight Obituary
Jesse Basnight of Columbia, SC, passed away peacefully on October 23, 2014. His wife, Alice predeceased him in 2007. He is survived by his children, Betty Crowley (Jim) of Valley Cottage, NY, Tom (Jan) of Speculator, NY, David (Susan) of Valley Cottage, NY, and Mark (Deb) of Columbia, SC; grandchildren, Jim Crowley Jr., Jason Crowley, Heather Crowley MacEachern, Dana Basnight Brown, Bryan Basnight, Caitlin Basnight, Elizabeth Basnight and Sarah Basnight; and one great-grandchild, Alex Crowley. He is also survived by one sister, Janet Creef of Virginia Beach, VA; and one brother, Aubrey Basnight of Nags Head, NC. He is predeceased by four of his siblings.
Born in Elizabeth City, NC, May 23, 1921, Jesse served in the Civilian Conservation Corps then enlisted in the Army at the start of WWII. He did his basic training at Ft. Bragg, NC, then onto Camp Shanks in Orangeburg, NY. While stationed there, he met Alice Stoughton of Tappan, NY and they married on May 21, 1944. After the service, he worked in construction and had his own business, Basco Building Supply. Jesse was very involved in church activities, teaching Sunday school, serving as a deacon, the prison ministry, he was a Gideon for over 60 years, and sang in the choir. He later retired back to his original home in East Lake, NC and then to Elgin, SC. Jesse is now in the presence of the Lord he loved and served faithfully.
A viewing will be held at the Twiford Funeral Home, 500 Budleigh Street, Manteo, NC on Thursday, October 30 from 6 to 8 pm. Funeral service will be at 1 pm on Saturday, November 1, at the Mount Carmel United Methodist Church, 6628 US Hwy 64, Manns Harbor, NC. Interment will follow immediately at the Mount Carmel Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Rice Estate, 100 Finley Rd, Columbia, SC 29203 or Mount Carmel United Methodist Church, PO Box 95, Manns Harbor, NC 27953.
