May He Rest In Peace – Sailor Rest Your Oar
The San Diego Chapter, U.S. Submarine Veterans of WWII sadly announces the passing of Michael A. Monasterio. Mike was born March 2, 1925 in Stockton, California. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in May 1943. Mike attended boot camp in Foraget, Idaho and Iowa State College of Engineering. His volunteer Submarine Duty took him to New London, Connecticut basic training and Submarine Engineering School. Mike's first sea duty was on the USS Norwal Submarine in Perth, Australia. Mike made three war patrols, served two years as a Navy Recruiter and retired in 1963 after 20 years of service to his country. As a civilian Mike worked 29 years at Vandenberg Air Force Base in Refrigeration Air Conditioning, retiring from that job in 1993.
Military Honors will be presented by the United States Navy. Memorial Services for Michael A. Monasterio, 84 of Lompoc will be at La Purisma Church on Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at 10am, followed by interment at the Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery.  A viewing will be held at the chapel of Starbuck-Lind Mortuary on Tuesday evening from 4 to 8pm, with a Rosary at 7pm.
Mike is survived by his loving and loyal wife of 38 years, Beverly Monasterio; daughter Rita (Craig) Monasterio/Smith of Eugene, Oregon; stepsons Bill (Angie) Grossi of Carson City, Nevada and Dan (Bev) Grossi of Lompoc; brothers, Frank (Lucille) Monasterio of Yuba City and Dan Monasterio of Sacramento; sister Mary Lou (Bryan) Bauer of Aptos, California; brother-in-law Cory Gardner of San Jose; grandchildren Julie (Lyle) Pope, Danny (Candi) Grossi of Lompoc, Jesse Weeks of Alta, Utah, Jamie (Jeff) Nolan of San Diego and Kimberly Coleman; great-grandchildren, Todd Hauenstein, Cierra Pope, Tanner, Walker and Garrett Grossi of Lompoc, Devon and John Nolan of San Diego, as well as numerous nieces and Nephews. Mike was preceded in death by his sons, Michael "Sonny" Monasterio and Anthony Monasterio and sister, Mercedes Gardner.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Parkinson Disease Foundation and Cure PSP Society for Progressive Supranuclear Palsy.

Dear Mrs. Monasterio> My name is Jerry Casey. Iserved with Mike on the USS Sirago and I remember him as a really nice young man who was dedicated to the Navy and our country which he serve. You have my sincere condolences. Mike will be remembered in our prayers. God Bless.
