Norma Griffin Obituary

Norma Phyllis Griffin
1918-2010
Norma Phyllis Griffin of Lompoc, California died Friday, October 29th 2010.  She was born in Los Angeles, California, July 31st 1918 to Grace and Norman Horton.  Norma was the fourth of five children, and baptized May 14th, 1928 at University Christian Church in Los Angeles.   She graduated from Manual Arts High School in 1936.  She married Alvah Merle Griffin September 12th, 1937.  She was a devoted homemaker and wife with a flare for design and created her own wedding dress.  Her first child was born in 1938 and lived just one day.  She and "Griff" had Michael in 1939, and daughter, Merrill "Suzi" in 1942.   Norma and her husband moved to Lompoc in 1984 and were members of Trinity Church of the Nazarene since 1987.  She and Griff were married for 67 years until his death in 2004.
Norma lived her life with passion and heart.  Her life with Griff was devoted to nurturing and building a strong Christian family.  Throughout her life, she and Griff came to know an amazing and joyful group of friends.  Norma was the perfect example of living the Golden Rule.  She gave of herself and her heart, limitlessly, and in turn, she received the truest and greatest gifts…friends and family who loved her deeply and beyond measure, and a complete and loving relationship with Jesus Christ, her Lord and Savior.  Anyone that knew her would tell you, she was one of the most loving, giving, honest, and truly Christian people that they were blessed to have ever known.
Norma is survived by her son Michael Griffin and his wife Carol of Juneau, Alaska; daughter Suzi Oaks and husband Don of Solvang; grandsons Chris Griffin and wife Lisa, Steve Oaks and wife Michelle; granddaughters Melinda Griffin and Tiffany Bloyer and husband Chris; great-grandchildren Timothy, Nicholas, Michaela, Lindsay, Robert, Lauren, Mitchel,  Zach, Alex, and Sam; sister Marjorie Dalton of Lompoc: and many nieces, nephews, relatives and dear friends; and finally by her constant friend and companion, Duffee.
Her parents, husband, firstborn, sister, Opal Peo, brothers, Gerald Horton and Wilmot Horton, and sweet dog, Paddy all preceded her in death.
A Graveside service to celebrate Norma's life will be held on Monday November, 8th  2010 at 11 a.m. at the Lompoc Cemetery.  If you would like to honor Norma and the life she led, please take a moment to consider offering your time and heart to others as you travel your own paths.  For Norma and for those that she raised, taught, and loved, the rewards are immeasurable.

I miss her everyday and upon my grandparents passing I was comforted to know that Mrs. Norma was there to welcome them to heaven and say to them " hey kids" as she always did.
As I grow older and now have a daughter of my own, I hope to display the same love and kindness that she always showed the people in her life. Perhaps I'll even start having a jar of Hershey kisses for the kids in my neighborhood :) like she did. Her memory is very much alive, even across the continent in Nova Scotia. I will love you always Mrs. Norma.

Dear Suzi and Michael.
Pat and I were saddened by the news of Norma's passing. We have been friends with her for many years. Norma was family to us. She was the like a grandmother to Kevin and Kerstin, and stayed in touch with us long after we moved up north. We will truly miss her. Pat and Uschi

She is the greatest person I've ever known and I count my blessings everyday that I got to know this truly wonderful lady for the last eighteen years. I'm a better person because I knew Mrs. Norma.

Dear Michael and Suzi and families:
I'm so sorry we can't be with you today.
During my last stay in the hospital, I got to talk with Aunt Norma twice and received two cards from her too. You can imagine how those contacts lifted my spirits. And that was what she did all her life ... lift the spirits of those around her. She is someone that I will always love dearly.
The other recent event that epitomizes Aunt Norma came when I called Suzi to check on her after her operation. "She's out practice driving because she has her motor vehicle test next week," you said.
I was surprised, but shouldn't have been. In the western movies, they would describe her as having "grit." And a whole bunch of love for everyone she met!
You're in our prayers.

"Our birth is but a sleep and a forgetting:
The Soul that rises with us, our life's Star,
Hath had elsewhere its setting,
And cometh from afar:
Not in entire forgetfulness,
And not in utter nakedness,
But trailing clouds of glory do we come
From God, who is our home:"

Suzi and all family, please know that our prayers and thoughts are with you. Norma was indeed the most wonderful neighbor and friend anyone could want. She was devoted first to her Lord which was the foundation for everything she accomplished in her life and every relationship she established. We can only picture the incredible hug she received from our Lord, along with His words, "well done, good and faithful servant." She will be missed and remembered by many.

What a special, loving, giving cousin Norma was. We all loved her dearly. There was rejoicing in heaven on Friday when the two Horton girls welcomed their favorite cousin!
