John Bronger Obituary

Bronger, John G. "Jerry",

80, our guy with the big heart, went to a better place on Thursday, September 29, 2016.

Jerry served in the Coast Guard during the Korean War era, worked as a sales rep for various companies, and was a Catholic by faith. Jerry was an Alderman for the old Louisville Board of Alderman, and a Kentucky State Representative, where he forged a reputation as Jefferson County's most powerful legislator and one of the most influential in the entire state. He played a key role in keeping Humana in Louisville, and was the deciding vote in changing the name of Walnut Street to Muhammed Ali Blvd.

He was loved by his wife of 56 years (together for 60 years), Nancy Thomas Bronger; his children, Glen Seawright, Lesa Harbin, and Mike Bronger (Arlene); his grandchildren Travis, Chad (Krissie), Blake, Morgan, Jordan, Natalie, Dylan, and Mason; great-grandchildren Kaitlyn, Leland, and Addilyn; sisters, Bonita Carrico, Ann Burton, and Carmel Higgins; and his beloved dog, Jude. He was preceded in death by his parents Paul Bronger and Mary Ellen Fallon Bronger; and siblings, William P. Bronger, Martin P. Bronger, Nick Bronger, and Mary Rita Hofelich.

His favorite pastimes were spending time at Churchill Downs, golfing with friends, and spending time with family. Jerry never missed a summer of taking his family on vacation and believed in family over everything. As Jerry would say, "every day is a bonus".

His funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 am Monday at Incarnation Catholic Church, 2229 Lower Hunters Trace, followed by burial at Louisville Memorial Gardens West. Visitation will be held from 2-8 pm Saturday and Sunday at Heady-Hardy Funeral Home, 7710 Dixie Hwy.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts be made to the American Diabetes Association, the Alzheimer's Association, or charity of the donor's choice.

I was saddened to hear of Jerry's passing. He was a friend and supporter early in my career when I needed a mentor. As the many years passed I regret that I lost touch with him. Nancy, Lesa, and family--you are in my thoughts and prayers. I regret that I am in California and will miss the services.

Jerry's life with us here has been one of great determination to see the ideals of the Democratic Party become and remain reality for us all. Jerry succeeded.

I, too, enjoyed every moment I had the privilege to share with Jerry during my 16 years as Jefferson County Attorney and in my private life that followed.

May he receive God's blessings for a job well done and the thousands of folks whom he helped and encouraged with his good will and good spirits
