JEFFERSONVILLE - DeBurger, James Edward PhD., 86, passed away Tuesday, October 30, 2012.
Born April 26, 1926, in Madison, IN, he remained a resident of Madison from birth to young adulthood. James was a World War II
Navy Veteran and served as a Methodist minister in young adulthood. He received a Bachelor Degree in Sociology from University of Louisville and a Masters and PhD in Sociology from Indiana University
. He was a retired University of Louisville Sociology Professor and served as department chair. He was the author of books on marriage, family and criminology. He was awarded a Woodrow Wilson Scholarship for his graduate studies. He was a member of the American Legion Jeffersonville Post and the Jeffersonville Evening Optimist Club, where he served as president and Lieutenant Governor of Indiana Optimist South District.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Charlotte and Edward DeBurger; two sisters, Mabel and Alice; and six brothers, Victor, Charlie, Murrell, Ralph, Gene and Robert.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Dr. Virginia Hurst; and his loving children from a former marriage to Marie Bolton, Charlotte Riley (Tom) of Augusta, GA, Stella Bruner (Mark) of Madison, IN, Mark DeBurger (Mary) of Jeffersonville, IN, and Daniel DeBurger of Clarksville, IN. He is also survived by his loving grandchildren, Aaron, Kevin, Stephanie, Sarah, Kristopher, Kenneth, James and Joshua; great grandchildren, Amber, Aaliyah, Avrey, Skylar, Riley, Aaryanna, Kayleigh, Audrey, Vivian and Kolton; and great-great grandchildren, Destani, Zane and Brysan.
Funeral services: 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 3, 2012 at Legacy Funeral Center in Jeffersonville, IN, with burial in Walnut Ridge Cemetery. Visitation: Friday, November 2, 2012 from 4-8 p.m. and on Saturday from 9-11 a.m.
