James Emmet Alvey Jr. M.D.

ALVEY, JAMES EMMET JR., MD, 81, died Thursday, February 14, 2013 at Norton Brownsboro Hospital.

Dr. Alvey was a retired anesthesiologist, who practiced at St. Joseph's and then Audubon Hospital. Prior to his career as an anesthesiologist, he was a general practitioner for over 19 years in southwest Jefferson County before returning to the University of Louisville for his residency. Dr. Alvey served in the United States Navy with a rank of lieutenant commander. He was a graduate of Flaget High School. He is preceded in death by his parents, James E. Alvey Sr. and Anna Berghaus; sister, Dorothy Schilling; brothers, Art Alvey and Francis Alvey MD.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Suzanne Groppe; children, James Alvey (Brenda), Louise Smith (Donald), Matthew Alvey (Cynthia), Susan Akaydin (Ahmet), Martha Carter (Douglas) and Sarah Scheetz (Joel); a brother, John Alvey (Marlyn); 22 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A celebration of his life will be 10 a.m. Monday at Ratterman's St. Matthews, 3711 Lexington Road, with burial in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation: 2-6 p.m. Sunday.
