O'BRYAN, JOHN AUGUSTINE, 94, of Payneville, KY, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at Audubon Hospital. He was surrounded by his beloved family.
A lifelong member of St. Theresa Catholic Church, John was a minister of the Eucharist, a homebound minister to the sick and a minister of music. The strong presence of Christ, which he embodied each day, was a legendary example to the many people who knew and loved him. Papa John retired from Fort Knox after 35 years of Civil Service. He also continued farming the land on which he was raised. He married the love of his life, Anna Rita Manning, on July 19, 1938. They were the parents of 14 children; 37 grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. The joys of his life included his faith, family, farm and music.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Anna Rita Manning O'Bryan, his parents, Junius and Isabel O'Bryan; three sisters, Dolly Carter, Alice Rhodes, Ellen Ray; brother, Benjamin O'Bryan; son, Junius Augustine; two daughters, Joann Manning and Helen Greenwell; three grandchildren, John Preher III, Troy Manning and Samuel Highbaugh and three sons-in-law, Bobby Greenwell, Ronnie Moore and Terry Highbaugh.
Papa John is survived by his children, Frances (Mike) Clark, Mary Rita (Jack) Neff, Marilyn (Jay) Preher, Jean Moore, John (Wilma) O'Bryan, Doris June (Buddy) Werner, Rebecca Highbaugh. Ellen (Dennis) Brothers, Mike (Diana) O'Bryan, Andrea Esarey (Gary Bradley), Betty (Brad) Polen and son-in-law, George Manning. He also leaves behind a large circle of extended family and friends.
Visitation will be at the Bruington-Jenkins-Sturgeon Funeral Home in Brandenburg, KY on Friday, January 18, 2013 from 2-8 p.m. and after 8 a.m. Saturday. Funeral Mass of Celebration of Papa John's life will be held Saturday, January 19, 2013 at 11 a.m. at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Rhodelia, KY.
