John Jacob Woehrle Sr.

JEFFERSONVILLE - Woehrle, John Jacob Sr., 89, passed away on Sunday, April 27, 2014, at Clark Memorial Hospital.

He was born on August 28, 1924 in Clarksville, IN, to the late Jacob William and Ethel Woehrle. He was a lifelong member of St. Luke's United Church of Christ in Jeffersonville, and served his country during World War II in the United States Navy.

He was a successful business owner who previously owned Dairy Glade Ice Cream Store, Jerry's Restaurant, Lakewood Drive-In Theatre and Clarksville Drive-In Theatre. He was a member of the Jeffersonville Masonic Lodge #340, the Scottish Rite, Tri-County Shrine Club, the Jeffersonville Elks Club, and Jeffersonville Evening Optimist Club. His humanitarian contributions included the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army, the Community Foundation of Southern Indiana, The Clark Memorial Hospital Foundation and many others.

He provided Southern Indiana with numerous scholarships for students, and donations to support community activity including the Woehrle Athletic Complex and the Jeff GRC Little League Woehrle Field. Several awards he received over the years include, 2007 Noah's Ark Angel Award, 2010 American Red Cross Bales Humanitarian Award, and in 2013 the Community in Schools of Clark County Champions for Children Award.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Shirley Payne Woehrle; a son, John Jacob Woehrle, Jr.; three brothers, Leslie Woehrle, David Woehrle, Aubrey Woehrle; and one sister, Thelma Holland.

He is survived by his daughter, Mary Beth Woehrle-Neidenberger and her husband Richard Allan; two granddaughters that kept the sparkle in his eye, Olivia Kate Neidenberger and Evelyn Grace Neidenberger; and a sister, Ethel Cundiff.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Scott Funeral Home, with burial to follow in Walnut Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from noon-8 p.m. and after 9 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
