EVANS, JOHN SHERMAN SR., 74, a husband, a father, a grandfather, a brother, a longtime maintenance mechanic and a die-hard fan of University of Kentucky basketball, died Friday, December 28, 2012, at his Louisville home.
He was born in Louisville on July 27, 1938, the 11th of 12 siblings. He served in the Navy from 1957 to 1961, then served two years in the Navy Reserves. He worked for over 30 years at the plant at 11th and Hill streets owned by Celanese Coatings and later Rhone-Poulenc, retiring in 1994.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Patricia (Combs), of Louisville; a son, John Jr. "J.J.," his partner, Lori Kelley, and a grandson, John III "Jack," all of Washington, D.C.; a sister, Maxine Nelson of Louisville; a brother-in-law, Cecil Combs of Louisville; his "No. 2 son," Billy Vaughn, of Lebanon Junction, KY; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Marie Evans; five brothers; and five sisters.
Visitation will take place 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Schoppenhorst, Underwood and Brooks Funeral Home, 4895 N. Preston Hwy., Shepherdsville, KY. A funeral Mass will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Rita Catholic Church, 8709 Preston Hwy., Louisville. Entombment will take place at Resthaven Memorial Park, 4400 Bardstown Rd., Louisville.
