WILLIAMS, MARTHA COOPER HARRIS, was born in Milton, TN on September 18, 1931 and returned to her Heavenly Father on Thursday, August 22, 2013.
Martha spent most of her life in education. She graduated from Middle Tennessee State University, began her teaching career in Nashville, TN but soon moved to Louisville and was a teacher at the old Lowell Elementary School for 30+ years where she touched the lives of many students.
During her teaching career she was a representative and active member of JCTA, and a member of KEA and the Jefferson County Retired Teachers.
Martha was very active on the political scene. She served four years working as an administrative assistant in the administration of Governor Martha Layne Collins. She served as a delegate to several democratic presidential conventions, and worked tirelessly in political campaigns to get candidates elected.
She was a member of the former Lighthouse Christian Church and helped to organize and start their Valor Christian School. She recently was an active member of Life In The Spirit Fellowship Church.
Martha was a friend to many and was always willing to help others. She had a soft spot in her heart for the disadvantaged.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jessie Cooper Harris and Clarence Harris.
She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted husband of 59 years, Charles Donald "Don" Williams; son, Charles Donald "Donnie" Williams, Jr; grandchildren, Martha Ann Williams, Clay Henry Williams, and Hannah Williams; her special great-grandson, Clayton, who she loved to watch play football; great-grandaughters, Breaunna, Ireland and Kierra; sister, Helen Derthick (Henry) and a host of friends.
Her funeral is 2 p.m. Monday at Fern Creek Funeral Home, 5406 Bardstown Road with entombment in Resthaven Memorial Park. Visitation is after 1 p.m. Monday.
