ALEXANDER, MARY ELIZABETH BRIGHT BELMEAR, 95, educator, world traveler, civic minded and socially active, passed away peacefully May 8, 2011.
She was born June 15, 1915, the first of four children to Dr. Andrew J. and Wilhelmina Bright in Nashville, TN.
She was educated in the Louisville public schools before earning her BA degree at the University of Louisville and master's degree from Columbia University (NY). Additionally, she did post graduate work at the University of Kentucky, Purdue University

and the University of Wisconsin
She married Herbert B. Belmear in 1943. There was one child from this union, Audrey Ann Greta Belmear. The marriage ended in divorce. In 1952, she married Dr. Lloyd E. Alexander and was married for 42 years.
Mrs. Alexander taught for 42 years in the Jefferson County, KY School District principally at Central High School and Atherton High School. She was an instructor at Jefferson Community College.
As a resident of Louisville, Mrs. Alexander enjoyed memberships in various organizations: Plymouth Congregational Church, a member of the board of directors of Nazareth College, now Bellarmine University, National Conference of Christians and Jews, Speed Museum, Promoting Enduring Peace, Louisville Fund for the Arts, the Evening Bridge, Louisville Science Center, American Association of University Women, a charter member of the Links, Inc., the Moles, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and she was a Kentucky Colonel. Dr. and Mrs. Alexander traveled extensively in Europe, the Middle East and Asia until his death in 1994. Mrs. Alexander relocated to the Fort Myers/Cape Coral area in 1996. She enjoyed memberships in the Fort Myers Congregational Church, the American Association of University Women and the SW Florida Symphony Society.
Preceding her in death are her husbands, Herbert B. Belmear and Dr. Lloyd E. Alexander; her sisters, Lillian and Wilhelmina; her brother, Andrew; and her stepson, Lloyd Alexander II.
She is survived by her daughter, Audrey Ann Greta Giffoniello; her stepson, Dr. William H. Alexander (Cassie); her grandchildren, Lloyd II (Lynn), Denis Alexander and Joseph and Maria Giffoniello; her great-grandchildren Abigail and Grace Alexander; her daughter-in-law, Cari Alexander; and a host of extended family and friends.
A memorial service will be held 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, July 5, 2011 at A.D. Porter & Sons, Funeral Home, Bardstown Road, followed by a private funeral service July 6, 2011 at Cave Hill Cemetery.
