OGBURN, MARY GAIL SIMMS was born to Francis Gregory Simms and Delena Barber Simms on April 10, 1939, in Springfield, KY. She was the fourth of seven Simms children and educated at St. Dominic's Grade School, among a nurturing extended family of dozens of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends in Springfield. Graduating from St. Catharine's Academy School in 1957, she moved to Louisville where she found work and many friends.
Before meeting and marrying Jim Ogburn, Gail travelled back to Springfield to explore the future of St. Catherine's Novitiate, undoubtedly inspired by the example of three of her aunts, sisters of Mercy and Ursuline. Her year as a postulate assured her and the Ursulines that God had a different vocation in mind and her strong and abiding faith was rewarded in a career as wife, mother and friend.
In addition to her father and mother, Gail lost her sister, Flo Simms Cambron.
She is survived by her husband, James E. Ogburn Sr.; son, Jim Jr. with wife Jeanelle and their children Angus and Audrey Ogburn and daughter Lucy Weaver with husband Chad and their son Grayson Weaver. She is also survived by her sister, Madeleine Simms Grayson; and her brothers, Sandy, John B., Phil and Alex Simms, and as "Aunt Pretty" to all her cherished nieces and nephews.
Gail's outreaching personality and willingness to take on challenges supported the couple's 48 years of marriage and job assignments in Los Angeles, Cohasset, MA, Cincinnati, OH and Orlando, FL. She always took a good time with her and shared it with everyone she met. She never left the friends at home and has enjoyed the renewal of 50-year long friends during retirement.
Visitation will be Thursday, March 7, 2013 from 2 - 8 p.m. at Highlands Funeral Home and the funeral Mass will be held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church at 10 a.m. Friday March 8, 2013.
