GROSS, ORVILLE, 93, of Louisville, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 21, 2013 surrounded by family.
Born August 20, 1920 in Harlan County, KY, Orville was the son of the late James Gross and Sallie (Skidmore) Gross and a graduate of Union College in Barbourville, KY, where he attended on a tennis scholarship.
Orville was a Chemical Engineer having started his career with Ashland Oil Company. Later he worked for United Catalyst where he remained until his retirement in 1985. With his knowledge in the field, he developed several patents that involved different catalyst.
Orville proudly served in the U.S. Air Force as a Pilot and retired as LT COL in the Reserves. During his tour of duty, he fought at the end of World War II
and during the Korean Conflict
He was a KY Colonel and member of Middletown United Methodist Church, Shawnee Masonic Lodge #830 and Midland Trail Golf Course. Orville had a passion for golf and was very accomplished at the sport. He travel all over the world and played a many golf courses during those travels. He was a Club Champion at the Bobby Nichols Golf Course and throughout his love of the sport he achieved making several holes in one.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 50 years, Lillian L. McIntyre Gross; a granddaughter; two brothers; and two nephews.
Orville is survived by his children, Gail Mansfield (Sam) and Phil (Jan) Gross, both of Louisville; grandchildren, Leslie Byers (Eddie), Emily and Phil Gross; great-grandchildren, Brendon Sullivan, Adian and Lennon Wood; and many nieces and nephews.
His funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, October 26, 2013 at Ratterman Funeral Home, 12900 Shelbyville Road, East Louisville followed by burial in Resthaven Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. Friday, and after 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
