Robert Bruce Bass

BASS, ROBERT BRUCE, 94, died February 28, 2013.

He was born May 14, 1918 in Louisville, KY, and was predeceased by his parents, Dr. and Mrs.

Albert Leonard Bass; and his sister, Doris Andrews.

He graduated from Male High School and while at the U of L Speed School, received his pilot's license.

He enlisted in Pilot Training U.S. Army Air Force and graduated Class 41E (June). He was Pilot of one of the first groups of B-17 Flying Fortress to fly to England in August 1942. He was in formation with the first American group to bomb France. Later he was transferred to the 8th Bomber Command Headquarters, next to Wright Field, then to Dayton, OH, and then to the 1st Air Force Headquarters at Mitchell Field.

He returned to Louisville in the fall of 1945 and was separated as a Lt. Colonel from the Air Force. His business career included ten years at The Belknap Hardware Co. as furniture buyer, Executive Vice-President at the Frame House Gallery, and owner of the Bass Furniture Galleries from which he retired. His interests included hunting, fishing, Boy Scouts, member of The Vestry at St. Francis in the Fields Episcopal Church, and of course his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Catherine Price Bass; four children, Dr. R. Bruce Bass Jr. (Patti), Dr. Barbara F. Bass (Barbra Levin), Caroline Coleman (James), and Dr. C. Kelly Bass (Michael Wilson); grandchildren, Samuel R. Bass II (Elizabeth), Catherine P. Bass, Elizabeth Bass Bowe (Andrew), Peter B. Coleman (Heather), Emily Coleman Murlidhar (Sid), Brendan Wilson, Mackenzie Wilson, Theodore Wilson; and great-grandchildren, Maxwell Coleman, Lila Coleman, and Emerson Bowe.

His funeral service will be held at noon on Monday at St. Francis in the Fields Episcopal Church, 6710 Wolf Pen Branch Road (at US Hwy 42), with private burial Cave Hill cemetery. Visitation is 11 a.m. - noon on Monday at Church. Arrangements under the direction of Pearson's.
