Stewart Joy Obituary

JOY, REV. STEWART MURRAY, 90, The Reverend Stewart Murray Joy, Episcopal priest, loving husband, father and grandfather, died peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, April 3, 2013.

Rev. Joy grew up in Atlantic City, NJ, and won a scholarship to the Hill School in Pottstown, PA. From there, he attended the University of Virginia and graduated with a double major in Biology and History. While attending Temple Medical School in Philadelphia in 1943, he was drafted into the Army as a medical-surgical technician and served in the Asiatic Pacific Campaign during World War II. As a medic, he cared for many wounded American soldiers, some of whom had been Prisoners of War in Japanese internment camps. He also helped civilians in Manila who suffered from war trauma and was awarded the Philippine Liberation Ribbon. Rev. Joy learned many lessons from his military service; the most memorable being that war is humanity's greatest tragedy.

When the War ended, he returned to Washington D.C. and met his true love, Ellen Pope Beam, a cartographer for the Army Map Service. Although he built a successful career with Upjohn Pharmaceuticals, Rev. Joy decided to enter Virginia Theological Seminary, and after graduation, was responsible for St. Paul's Episcopal Church, in Washington D.C. He then accepted a call to serve St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Louisville, where he flourished, performing weddings, hosting a huge youth group, and serving as confident to parishioners for over 30 years. He truly enjoyed serving as Rector of St. Mark's.

He was an avid reader of history and the classics, which gave him a huge advantage every evening going head-to-head with his grandson Andrew answering Jeopardy questions. He enjoyed many summer afternoons relaxing at Lakeside Swim Club or walking around the Crescent Hill Reservoir, both of which were Louisville substitutes for his beloved Atlantic Ocean.

Rev. Joy was a member of Downtown Rotary Club; he was a Paul Harris Fellow, a member of Louisville Masonic Lodge 400, and member of the Scottish Rite, the York Rite, and a member of the Order of the Rose Croix. He is predeceased by his father, Percy Clark Joy M.D., and mother, Gladys Joy Bonsor; and his brother, William Addison Joy, M.D.

Survivors include his wife, Ellen Beam Joy; his son, James Stewart Joy (Catherine Frazier); his daughter, Suellen Joy Brill (Rev. Robert Brill); and six adoring grandchildren, Christopher Stewart Joy, Alexander James Joy, Charles Frazier Joy, Caitlin LaVera Joy, Andrew Clark Brill, and Cassandra Abigail Joy Brill.

The family would like to thank Albert Olash M.D., Danny Woo, M.D., Keith Christensen, Hosparus, and the Masonic Home staff for their calm and caring compassion.

Visitation will at Pearson's Funeral Home on Breckinridge Lane on Sunday, April 7, 2013 1-5 p.m., and the funeral will be held Monday, April 8, 2013 at St. Mark's Episcopal Church at 11 a.m.. The burial at Cave Hill will follow at a later date.

Memorial gifts can be made to St. Mark's Episcopal Church Scholarship Fund or to Calvary Episcopal Church.

Not sure what to say?

I remember Rev. Joy as a wonderful man. In 1975-76 I lived in the garage apartment behind their house on Birchwood, while completing my Doctorate in Music at Southern Seminary. Rev. Joy and entire Joy family treated me so kindly...I will always be thankful for that. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Dr. Cleamon Downs

What a great guy. Last time I saw he and his wife, they were in a convertible on a beautiful day, and having a ball. A great abmiration for him.

I was saddened to hear of Rev. Joy's passing. He was a delightful man and neighbor! I mowed their lawn a few times as a child and he married my first wife and I as well as Christened my oldest daughter. R.I.P. and prayers for the family.

We will miss his great smile, humor, and sweet personality. He and Popey had so many wonderful years together exploring the world and making friends everywhere. He may now rest from his labors.
