BELL, WILLIAM MARTIN SR., 92, our wonderful father, William "Buddy" Bell, son of William James and Viola Eggers Bell and husband to Romula Casas for 65 years, has gone to be with our heavenly Father Saturday, March 16, 2013. He was a dedicated, loyal, and loving husband, father, brother, and friend to many.
Mr. Bell was a member of the St. Xavier class of 1939, attended the University of Louisville, and retired from General Electric. He served in the U.S. Army Corp during World War II
Dad was an avid bridge player who learned at an early age from his father, Wm. J. Bell, a master bridge player. Golf was Bills' sport; the annual 'Wm. Bell, Sr. Golf' and picnic was created in his honor. His Catholic faith was with him always and he was an active parishioner at St. Michaels and recently worshipped at St. Margaret Mary. Dad was a true gentleman! He inspired, taught, listened and dedicated a large part of his 31 years of retirement helping his family and his many friends. He enjoyed his time volunteering at Baptist Hospital East. He loved and was loved by many.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Romula Casas; father, Wm. James; mother, Viola; son, Christopher; siblings, Carolyn Koestal, Thomas Bell, Patricia Van Houten.
He is survived by his children, William M. Bell, Jr. (Lanny), Bernard J. Bell (Shirley), David L. Bell (Betty), Gregory M. Bell (Diane), Mary R. Langston, Pamela B. Grayson (Bill) and Deborah B. Thompson; his 17 grandchildren, William Bell (Dana) Heather Leis (Craig), Matthew Pafunda (Keith), Michael Pafunda, Brooke Bond (Jason), Brandi Webb (Matt), Bobby Bell (Lynn), Anna Bell, Nicholas, Alexander and Cecilia Ferguson-Bell (John), Zachary Langston, Ian Langston, Amy Grayson (Chad), Mark Grayson (Amber), Sydney Thompson and Adam Thompson; 15 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Helen Gies (Andy) and his loving companion, Carole Carter. Dad, you will be truly missed.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated in his honor 10 a.m. Friday at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, 7813 Shelbyville Road, with burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation: 2-8 p.m. Thursday at Ratterman & Sons, 3800 Bardstown Road. Expressions of sympathy may go to St. Mary's of Middletown, the DePaul School of Louisville or the St. Xavier Scholarship Fund.
